Volume Computed From a Measured Surface

A drone flight captures the pile or excavation as a dense set of overlapping images, which processing reconstructs into a measured three-dimensional surface. Volume is then calculated as the space between that captured surface and a defined base plane beneath it.

The base plane is where the judgment lives. It can be a flat elevation, a best-fit plane derived from the toe of the pile, or a previously captured terrain surface. Which one is correct depends on what is being measured, and getting it wrong is the most common source of a number that looks precise and is not.

For cut and fill on an active site, the same principle applies between two captured surfaces at different points in time, which yields how much material actually moved rather than how much was supposed to.

Traditional stockpile measurement means someone walking the pile with a rover, taking shots, and interpolating between them. It is slow, the number of points captured is a small fraction of what a drone flight records, and it puts a person on unstable material.
